‘The Pieces’ by Devon Lawrence is a painfully vulnerable pop ballad that captures the pain in asking for vulnerability. The pianos on the track are minimal, taking on a close to melancholic swell while our narrator empathises with their lover, seeing them where they are and meeting them there.
The song feels like a gentle admission of this love, laying bare all of its sharp edges and tender confessions, all while promising a solidness and vulnerability. Our narrator quietly wants a bit more from their lover, ‘’…I can’t pretend I don’t feel…”, “…I’m bending over backwards trying not to fall apart…”.
However, they also recognise what their lover is only able to give them.
“…I only sometimes wish you were holding more than you could give,
But I love the pieces you give me with my whole heart…”.
‘The Pieces’ captures the tenderness of intimate love that feels like an open wound or an ache when lovers don’t meet it on a similar wavelength of emotion. Our narrator seems to be at a crossroads, or at the beginning of one, recognising both the love they give and the guarded love and vulnerability they receive in turn.
The soundscape captures that aching pulse well, keeping it right under the surface, pushing to spill to the surface. “…You can’t pretend if you don’t feel…’. The song finds itself at a tipping point, where longing seems paired with a sad sort of wistfulness.
‘The Pieces’ captures aching vulnerability with poignant grace.
