‘CIGARETTE’ by Katie Belle is a pop track that is bright and sentimental, while musing over a relationship that feels hard to let go of. Familiar melodies set the tone, while the song’s clever lyrics run circles around the chill soundscape with sharp and refreshing metaphors.

Chill melodies and rhythms set the scene, while our narrator pines for their ex/would-be lover. Comparing themselves to a vice, our narrator wants their lover to take their ex to take them back. “…You’re more than my ex,…you’re all I think about…”.

“…So put me back between your fingertips,…come and get your fix…”.

On ‘CIGARETTE’, our narrator seems to admit defeat in a way, detached and longing for someone, but still hoping to “… be the hardest to forget…”. The soundscape feels like an intoxicating, heady mix, fuelling our narrator’s longing to have that love back.

“…I’ll be your bad habit…”. This line betrays our narrator’s need for this person in a way. Someone who means far more than the narrator lets on in person, a feeling for someone that the narrator longs for and that they can’t let go of.

‘CIGARETTE’ by Katie Belle seems to take on a sentimental yet bright mood, with chill rhythms expanding to hold in them the vulnerability in longing. Our narrator’s impulse seems self-destructive in a way, wanting for their lover and themselves to burn in the blaze of this longing, immersed in a familiar, but bygone era.

“…Light me up, we’ll burn together like a cigarette…”.
