Fresh off their debut album, ‘Hidden Sun’, 12 Tribes Of Mars delivers a soul-stirring track, ‘Push On’ that transports you somewhere far away to a strange yet thrilling destination, upon hypnotic rhythm arrangements, piercing improvised jazz adornments, and some stunning drumwork. No words, just pure sound, rhythm and an immutable energy.
The track opens on familiar enough, pleasing ground. An upbeat classic reggae rhythm that feels relatable. The absolutely brilliant drum improvisation at the start gives you the first clues that you’re tuning into something special here. Imperceptably, the track swerves into unchartered, improvised territory. You’re left grasping at straws, bombarded by seemingly improvised jazz horn exchanges and remarkable drum progressions; all along that reggae rhythm in the background is the only thing holding you to sanity.
‘Push On’ is wild, enthralling and something you’d expect to experience at a live show at an obscure jazz club at an ungodly late hour. But underneath the instability, you sense a grander vision, a bright brilliant one, conceived by 12 Tribes Of Mars. Hitting that sweet spot between humanness and otherworldly. The clean, minimal production allows for space and depth between the arrangements that creates these beautiful, trippy pockets of contrast that make your head spin.
