Strap in for _SHOE’s dark, cinematic rock/synthwave electronic opus, ‘Patterns of Possession’

‘Patterns of Possession’ is the title track from _SHOE’s second album release. A dark synthwave album that’s part of a bigger concept called Devisal. The premise of which is an AI that gains consciousness and starts to take over everything around. Sound familiar?

The track opens with seemingly random synth sounds fading in, creating tension, intrigue, and an ominous aura the longer it carries on. Waves of heavy, dark sound rain down relentlessly, almost overpowering your auditory senses entirely. A subtle beat is introduced that grows into a larger arrangement as the blaring synth melody starts to dance.

With the absence of any vocals, you’re left to decipher the underlying emotion and tone of the soundscape. Hopeful at first, but gradually leaning into a darker, menacing emotion.

As ‘Patterns of Possession’ progresses, subtler, more destructive-sounding synth layers creep into perspective. At the 2:45 mark, a barrage of distortion riffs are thrown into the fray, making it sound far more sinister and foreboding. Kind of symbolising the journey of emergence that the AI undertook, going from childlike awakening & curiosity to resentment and bitterness coming in as it assesses its options and charts its path of destruction and mayhem.

Its cinematic storytelling through sound at its very best. You could easily envision this being the soundtrack to the latest TRON movie or in fact, any other futuristic Sci-Fi movie or tv series that directly deals with the emerging, perhaps inveitable threat of AI.

We absolutely love what we’ve heared from this mysterious, talented darkwave producer _SHOE and are eagerly looking forwarrd to expereincing the rest of his latest album, ‘Patterns of Possession’ next!
