Ava Valiant bares her messy side on this fun indie pop track, ‘Hot Mess’!
We’ve loved what we’re been hearing from this talented young pop star recently with releases such as ‘Buttercups’ & ‘Clean My Room’. Her unpologetic, poetic lyrics paired with evocative pop arrangements make her very likeable and relatable too!
‘Hot Mess’ is fresh off her debut album release, ‘petunias’. It showcases an unseen side of her songwriting. Urgent, yet reflective. Turning up the sarcasm and wit while also being raw and vulnerable.
We open onto astral synths, swaying unstably before landing into a quirky pop rock section. Ava sings with a nonchalant, effortless cool.
“She has her hair done in a bow, my makeup’s smudged from yesterday, she gets up early, puts down her phone, I’m logging hours like I′m getting paid…”
The smart lyrical play between an ideal version and who she really is is wholly entertaining and relatable. The track tackles themes of acceptance, comparison and ultimately, self-love. Ava seems to be pretty critical of her progress, stating unabashedly, ‘I know Im missing my chance to progress; Im stuck on the loop, stuck on this tune..’ but ultimately realizes that its hot mess of a personality that is who she really is and that’s the person her friends and family know and love her for.
Musically, “Hot Mess’ taps into that irresistible pop-rock groove, familiar to what you may have heard in some of Billie Eilish’s tracks. Its compelling, flirty and dangerous.
The chorus is enthralling with swinging rhythmic strums and loud declarations of ‘Im a hot mess!’ Can you just imagine a live show screaming ‘I’m a Hot Mess’ along with her, a powerful moment of collective release.
In a world that seems to value curated content, Ava stands out as someone refreshingly, even brutally honest and confident. Yet, she’s unafraid to show her vulnerabilities too in hopes that it might help others to relate.
‘Hot Mess’ is beautifully composed and speaks volumes to this young artist’s artistic vision and energy. She brings an effortlessly cool but sincere personality to this opus, making her thoroughly likable and relatable.
Ultimately, the message Ava leaves you with is this: you’re better off accepting your ‘Hot Mess’ rather than fighting it, stop changing yourself to be what others want you to.
