A bad breakup leaves a woman so self-sufficient that she writes a song, produces, and engineers, then directs and edits a music video about it.

British rapper Beka Barz drops a tight hip-hop track that reimagines a pop classic. Opening with the iconic line from the Spice Girls’ Wannabe, “If you wanna be my lover,” she flips it into a siren call for the unfaithful lover. Beka Barz’ Wannabe tackles the classic trope of men who stay disloyal, all over a power-packed beat.

She collaborates with Zimbabwean beatmaker EliQr64 to take us through a story of betrayal that has left the artist in splits. Enraged by her cheating lover, she knows she’s too strong to be held down by it.

The intro kicks in with Beka Barz’s voice reverbed and layered, almost like we’re listening to the thoughts inside her head.

Don’t think I can do this anymore

You been lying, I been keeping scores

The vocals then kick in, front and centre, with an unbreakable flow. Atmospheric synth pads accompany her vocals, maintaining the mood with a fat bass line.

The rapper confronts the ex as she breaks down his behavioral patterns for us. To no one’s surprise, the man and his inflated ego battles it out with Barz’s indomitable self-esteem.

It’s cool though, Imma have another you though

Good luck to you though

Best you’ll get, an it hurts cause it’s truth bro

Beka Barz breaks the stereotype of the passive woman who stays put while the man takes action; the one who leaves. With her tongue-in-cheek lyrics, she makes it clear she’s the one walking away, better off without him.

Must’ve mistook me for someone else

Like I’m cool being left on the shelf

Like I’m needy and need your wealth

Like I’m weak, no sense of self.

Wannabe redefines a woman’s relationship with herself, shifting the narrative of what a woman looks like beyond love. She’s not broken. She’s independent—neither emotionally nor financially reliant on someone who is likely incapable of either for himself.
