‘Your Solitude’ is a sonically brilliant, euphoric post-punk opus from UK-based group Blindness & Light.
Listening to this gave the listener so many beautiful feelings. If there was ever a soundtrack to encapsulate how it feels to leave this earthly plane and ascend to a higher heavenly dimension, this would be it. It’s compelling, emotional, and uplifting with beautifully balanced instrumentation, folk-rock rhythms, and prayer-like hypnotic vocals.
Blindness & Light is led by Colin M Potter on guitars and vocals, Melisa Dopazo on bass, Glenn Welman on drums, and Helen Reynolds providing angelic backing vocals. The group is totally unshackled from traditional band structure and songwriting formulas. Instead, they’re inspired by the sounds of The Velvet Underground and the post-punk revolutions of the 80s and 90s.
‘Your Solitude’ opens with blinding, soaring harmonies, uplifting from the very first note. The symphony created between the instruments and vocals is astounding. Colin’s tender voice starts the rhythmic progression, his voice tender, reflective, and aching with emotion. Every word feels like a transmission from the great beyond. The track makes poignant refrains, allowing for the sound to develop and marinate beautifully. Each section, never overplayed, yet so detailed in its composition and deeply touching. One of the many standout aspects comes in the last minute of the track, as it crescendos magnificently before fading out with ease and grace.
This feels like so much more than just a song. ‘Your Solitude,’ as it’s aptly titled, is a deeply personal, cerebral journey into the unexplored spaces within us all. It’s an invitation to spend some time in the fleeting spaces between light & dark and sleep & awake.
