Centrifuge -You Are Yesterday is a jazzy, alt-rock statement of intent with a breezy, carefree attitude to boot.

‘You Are Yesterday’ is the third track from their debut EP, ‘Daydreams & Breakdowns.’ It doesn’t waste a second getting going. Blaring out of the gates come the soaring, bluesy guitar riffs, hooking you in immediately. The vibe is slick, eccentric, and free-spirited, kind of like that feeling of dizzying bittersweet mindspace when one gets out of a mean relationship.

German rockers Centrifuge are inspired by Alt-rock and power pop legends like the Pixies, Bush & Teenage Fanclub. Their refreshing sound does justice. The rhythm is playful yet melancholic. Short, wavy guitar riffs with distortion create intrigue and flair. The tone is playful and in your face, setting up the vocals well, determined to get the message across. One of the standout moments comes towards the end of the track with a majestic organ solo that brings a heady conclusion to this high-energy performance. One can’t help but see a similarity to ‘The Doors’ in the cohesiveness of the sound that creates the space and depth for the vocals to fly.

And fly they do! The vocals twist and shout with free-flowing momentum. Balanced between soft, whimsical, conversational lines like ‘Look at my bottle of beer in which I down the day. I wish that you could be here with me, but you have to … wait. Riding strong on the energy of the instrumentation, the soulful vocals are a joy to hear. The chous packs a punch, though. ‘You didn’t give me a reason. I thought you were only teasing. This isn’t pleasing….’ sounds vindictive and hurt. The vocals contrast well from verse to chorus, adding depth and texture to the listening experience.

‘Centrifuge -You Are Yesterday ‘ explores the range of emotions post a heartbreak. Starting from a sense of longing that creeps up when drinking a beer, to angst and despair at the pain of separation. There’s a cavalier, carefree attitude to getting over this breakup, it doesn’t wallow in pity.

For anyone who’s facing a tough time in their love life, ‘Centrifuge -You Are Yesterday ‘ is like that friend who you get drunk with, ride through with high and lows, and see you coming out shining on the other side. This is a thoroughly good time.
