Chandra is a pop rock band from Bristol UK that has been releasing music since 2020. It has Keith Jones on the drums, Chris Wong on the bass, Roch Cheung on the guitar and is led by vocalist Chandra Nair. Their 8th and latest single “Lifted” is bright-spirited and filled with hope.
The track starts off with twangy electric guitars that remind one of early 2000 rock music. The percussion is introduced to the slow riffs of the strings and the fairly simple beats serve as the instrumental back bone of the track. The pre-chorus is dominated by the synths and sounds straight out of a fairy tale. I thought that the back-up vocals were angelic and well done as the choir-like harmonies add a lot to the emotion of song.
The songwriting by Chandra self-admittedly comes from a desire to verbalise aspects of the human condition that are deliberately suppressed such as mental health and self-confidence. The anthemic words explore a positive mindset, considering all that can go right and your way. Smiling, having a good day and taking advantage of time are common occurrences in the track. I enjoyed the way it uses modern language in lines like “One they call slay”. It places emphasis on the connectedness of humanity with lines like “Standing hand-in-hand” and recognises the power of coming together in order to feel elevated.
“Lifted” is a hopeful pop-rock track with spiritual songwriting. Chandra takes you on a wholesome journey filled with positivity. Make sure to check it out here:
