Drift into a deeply immersive, reflective ambient electronica debut track from Chris Ami, ‘Hubris’

The Brit electronic music producer weaves a compelling musical journey, amplified by a crucial discourse from the one and only, Alan Watts.

Hubris’ is titled aptly as Watts dives into the topic of the extreme hubris that humanity seems to be exhibiting at the moment. As we struggle to deal with unimaginable technological advancement, the lines between what’s human and not are blurring.

Yet, we, oh so arrogantly, destroy and deviate from all known natural processes only to further our own selfish interests. And to what end? Our own extinction, probably, Watts prophesizes.

Musically, ‘Hubris’ is elegantly produced. Built upon grand, cinematic violin interludes, spacious atmospherics, and angelic choral vocals, it evokes a weightlessness, albeit an unsettling one. The use of space and depth is immense. It works well to get you to really reflect on Watts’s words.

Over its close to 5-minute runtime, you really feel that you’ve been given a God’s-eye view of the impending consequences of our species’ ‘Hubris’. Those final lines from Watts are especially telling.

‘We’ve run into a cultural situation, where we’ve confused the symbol with the physical reality. The money for the wealth, the menu with the dinner. And we’re starving on eating menus.” The deeper meanings of these words warrant quiet, honest reflection.

Chris Ami crafts the ideal cinematic soundscape for one to to truly experience Watt’s teachings in a profound way. With the release of his debut album, ‘Temperament,’ he makes an intriguing statement, one that, in his own words, ‘maps the psychological states that shape human experience—from philosophical confrontation to quiet surrender.
