Cory Legendre is a singer-songwriter based in Texas. He has been releasing music for the past year and his experience surviving congestive heart failure informs his understanding of death and influences the joy that emanates form his music. While he hopes to return to performing live on stage soon his new release “Dressed in Black” is the first track from his latest album “Reunited”.

The track starts off with very soothing and sombre acoustic guitar strings that set a melancholic yet hopeful ambience. We hear the voice of Cory Legendre seep in, filled to the brim with emotions. The production keeps the song instrumentally simple with only the percussion, guitars and keys to accompany Legendre’s voice, however it does carve out a lot of space within the song for instrumentation alone.

The songwriting takes a narrative form, telling the listener in third person the story of a woman who has lost love. “What if” are the first words on the record, pointing to how crucial the imagination of alternative realities can be in the process of coming to terms with grief. From a place of helplessness comes the questions of whether it is possible for our protagonist to truly get past the death of a loved one. I particularly enjoyed the penmanship on the bridge that describes the moment of departure.

The instrumentation on the song come together and complement each other extremely well. I encourage you to check out “Dressed in Black” by Cory Legendre in the context of their latest album “Reunited” here:
