DAD is a metal band from Brooklyn, NY who put out work primarily within the subgenre of sludge metal. They are self-admittedly known for their chaotic live performances and non-formulaic studio presence with which they have been able delve into the depths of darkness and translate it to their craft. Influenced by iconic acts like Jesus Lizard, Big Black and Slayer they have been releasing music since 2017, building up an eclectic discography. Their latest single “Snake Handshake” is grimy, sludgy and has everything one could ask for from neo-metal!
“Snake Handshake” starts off with extremely catchy guitar riffs that hook a listener. Although the track has a very dishevelled and chaotic ambience, it doesn’t have too many instrumental elements apart from the percussion and strings and it is impressive the kind of sonic atmosphere Dad is able to create with limited tools. The lead vocalist gives a performance filled with emotion, rage and release that rubs off on a listener with ease.
Dad displays much variation in the pre-chorus as well as the second verse although the track is short. In my opinion “Snake Handshake” walks the line between being too much and not going hard enough very elegantly, ensuring never to cross it; although it delivers high-energy for two minutes straight, it ends with an eery quiet. The lyrics are intentionally not clearly audible, but I enjoyed the mundaneness and hyper fixation on economic transactions – these erratic themes are visible in the title of the track as well!
