If you’re seeking a pick-me-up, check out Dandy John’s warm, supportive alt-pop-folk debut album, ‘Dandyworld’!
This is an album that speaks to the eternal optimist who lives within us all. The one who always manages to find that silver lining in every situation and to believe truly that, in the end, everything is going to be just fine and dandy!
Dandy John’s music finds itself sweetly lodged between classic folk pop and soul. A mix of The Beatles, Elton, Queen, Dylan and Weird Al all rolled up into one soul-stirring experience.
The opening track on his debut album, DandyWorld, is ‘Together’ warms the soul like a cup of hot chocolate on a cold night. Minimal, honest and reflective, the track stirs up feelings of love and, of course, togetherness. Evocative piano melodies, sublte synths and John’s unique vocal tenor and simple lyrics hit deep and true. He sings all the right words that make you not feel so alone. The chorus hits this point home with conviction – ‘Together, you’l never be alone. Together, we are really strong’. In a fragmenting world, this track is a heartening reminder that our greatest strength is our collective existence.
‘Freak’ swerves fantastically into an upbeat dance-pop vibe. John has you tapping your foot, nodding along in the groove; perhaps his words resonate deeply with some of us. John bravely declares, ‘He’s a Freak’, highlighting that dynamic, enigmatic type of guy. The one who turns heads wherever he goes. Musically, its a retro beats-powered track that feels like something out of an 80s pop album but with a modern soul. John’s witty, razor-sharp lyricism makes for an entertaining listen.
‘Children’, opens appropriately with the sounds of kids playing and laughing. A cinematic, sweeping, hopeful opus that conveys just how important it is for us (Adults) to nurture, encourage and allow (get out of the way) for their growth. After all, as he sings in a hopeful vocals, ‘They’re the future of the world’. An intelligent track that’s a must-listen for anyone who cares to understand why Children matter so much.
Switching tracks, ‘Parents’ pays it dues to those who brought us up with unconditional love, affection and support. Keeping true to the soulful vibe of the album, John speaks from the heart here, from the perspective of a child. Expressing its unbridled emotion for all the gifts it receives from its parents. At over 6 mins, this is a journey of a track, flowing beautifully on piano-led arrangements. Spacious, honest and touching, this is one of our favorites on this album.
‘Soulmate’ tunes back into retro, playful vibes. Infused with a disco soul, this track is whimsical, nonchalant and fabulous. John’s gift of taking a concept and riding with it is truly awesome. This is a track made for spontaneous jams and maddening moments of desire and connection.
‘Crank’ has John going deeper down the whimsical rabbit hole. A satirical track, making light of the madness we find ourselves exhibiting in our lives. Weird, wonderful and yet so warm, a standout track that will have you ‘cranking’ up the volume here!
Dandy John makes music that lives in the space between swagger and soul. Blending sharp songwriting with a laid-back edge, his sound pulls from classic influences while staying rooted in the present.
