Check & Swing to David Penn’s latest jazz composition, ‘Next Step’!
The veteran jazz composer, David Pen, is fresh off the release of his latest full length album, ‘Next Step’. An eclectic, yet honest, grounded collection of jazz tracks that speak volumes to his formal mentorship and frequent collaborations with jazz legends, the likes of Cecil McBee, Talib Qadir and Betty Carter.
The album title track, ‘Next Steps’, is smooth, evocative and rich all through its 9 minute runtime! . Right from its opening moments, well-arranged instrumentals function in beautiful symphonic grace, where each instrument is allowed room to breathe and hold space.
Flowing at a comfortable tempo, the track has delightful ebbs and swells, moving from one section to the next. Following the saxophone, the piano steps forward in a bright, harmonious lead. It crescendos, twists and swerves, and builds anticipation for the saxophone to return
The saxophone melodies lead and weave their way through the composition in astounding spontaneity and panache. The piano contributes a soft melodic structure, while the crisp drums make up a vibrant rhythmic base
Speaking of bass, David’s upright bass playing is finally in the spotlight in the second half of ‘Next Step’, complementing the saxophone with great depth and color. What makes his playing special is the restraint and elegance he brings. It makes you especially appreciate his contribution all that more.
Considering the caliber of jazz excellence on display here, it would be well worth your time and attention to listen to this album in its entirety.
