There’s something refreshing about Unknowing, an alt-metal track that doesn’t lean on heaviness alone but finds its pulse in details. Maybe it’s the six-beat on the drums, maybe it’s the light cymbal runs that peek through like a heartbeat, giving the song both urgency and air. There’s a nostalgic pull in the way it’s composed, a nod to the grit of early metal, while the lyrics tackle fractured ties and the stubborn pull to break free.
Deflecting Ghosts is a rock and alternative metal band based in Hutchinson, Kansas. They first surfaced in 2009 with Our Demo, only to split shortly after, leaving behind memories, good times, and regrets. Members Luke Fitzgerald, Will Kately, Travis Hemry, and Justin Boyd carved their sound back then. With longtime collaborator Rhema and drummer Austin now on board, the track feels like a chapter finally completed, reviving the song and giving it new life.
The drums follow a familiar beat, but there’s restraint in every hit, never overplaying or crowding the mix. The bass holds a prominent role, anchoring the track with a low-end pulse that drives the guitars and vocals while giving the song a sense of weight. Together, drums and bass create a tight, controlled foundation, building tension without ever feeling forced. The guitars and vocals move around this foundation with ease, each layer sliding into the next like stone against water, creating a soundscape that is both controlled and alive.
Unknowing is both a revival and a reminder. A band returning to its roots, reworking them into something sharper, more lived-in, and undeniably present.
