Dirk Garner – Clonk is a funkalicious, groove-laden, funk/jazz opus that feels like a vintage spiritual, psychedelic experience.
This opus has a wonderfully playful, electro-punk vibe. Dirk says the word ‘clonk’ refers to the sound of the repetitive keyboard note used all throughout the track. It’s also meant to represent a whimsical, figurative reminder for self-realization.
The track begins with Dirk’s ‘clonk’ notes and clap-along beats that feel irresistibly groovy. Sliding synth effects and ominous vocal effects herald the entry of some epic lines:
‘Truth bombs, So where does it lead us? Drops like a rock, but they don’t believe it…
Truth bombs, cos no ones buys it.
Lies all around us, so too many fight it..”
These philosophical lines are delivered with utmost sincerity and panache. The use of pitch-layered vocals adds yet another dimension of intrigue and appeal. Minimal instrumentation and beats serve to draw the listener into Dirk’s weird & wonderful soundscape with ease. He goes on to describe his choice of journey as a flying being. Over mountains, seas, deserts, and wherever he pleases to! This feels like the words of someone who has been through enough to see the world for what it is and what it feels like to not play by its rules but instead, create his own!
Towards the end of the track, Dirk implores for us all to come together as a collective consciousness and make a change for the greater good. It’s a simple, straight-forward message, communicated without any pretense or prejudice. The composition and arrangement feel DIY and show us to ingenuity of this artist. He’s one man, a musical machine sending messages of hope and encouragement to us all.
