Elovvaan Maku is a rapper, singer and songwriter from Odgen, Utah. He self-admittedly started learning music from the age of six by being in bands with his family and friends and for the last decade has decided to dedicate more time to his solo project. I love that Elovaan Maku chose to write his bio in first person as it feels personal and vulnerable as opposed to writing in third person which might look professional and objective but often ends up being detached. “Come Down” is one of the first songs he released back in 2014. He has followed it up with more singles in 2024, but listening to the track today takes us back to the early 2010s era.

Featuring A-train and Yung III, “Come Down” starts off with light sound effects and sirens that swing like pendulums. The instrumentation builds up a sense of urgency that immediately raises your heart rate and gets you in the mood for a high energy hip-hop track. This build-up pays off when the bass and hi-hat heavy and overall hard beat drops! The chorus feels intentionally, disorienting, amateur and home-made which dates the track in my opinion.

The lyricism of the track centres around self-assurance and self-confidence as is characteristic in hip-hop. It tackles themes like being the best, being the king of the jungle and keeping in 100. The line “I don’t eat a lot of meat, when it comes to the beef yo I’m going out to eat” I thought was really clever in terms of wordplay.

“Come Down” is reminiscent of early 2010s hip-hop and feels nostalgic towards a lost time. Make sure to experience it and add Elovvaan Maku to your hip-hop playlisyts!
