Etta Heartfield delivers an astounding vocal performance in latest indie release, ‘Underground’

Imagine the commanding vocals of Lana Del Rey combined with the emotional intensity of smoky midnight blues and you get a track like ‘Underground’.

The upcoming Australian vocalist shines bright in this dark, melancholic folk blues track that speaks to broken hearts. Her voice exudes a power, composure and grace far beyond her years.

Opening onto soft soulful piano tones and subtle beats, we’re introduced to Etta’s piercing baritone vocals. She sings a troubling narrative of disconnecting from all things bright & reality, traveling into a dark place to keep hidden from view.

Her words wrap around like a dangerously close embrace. Stirring backing vocals sing along in exquisite unison as the tracks flow through a swelling, powerful chorus section. Etta’s vocals extend to piercing highs and back to whispered lows with admirable balance and range.

“Underground” moves at an enticing, swaying tempo. Centered around Etta’s operatic vocals, it follows in the footsteps of jazz vocalists like Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald and is combined wtith modern sound sensibilities.

Etta’s musical training began at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School (VCASS), where she majored in singing and honed her skills on piano and cello. Following a short stint as a performer, she chose to walk away from music for close to two decades. Now, she returns with a renewed purpose and has been productive since the start of the year, releasing a slew of tracks.
