Strap in for a foot-stompingly brilliant, soul-baring folk rock opus by Ezra Vancil, ‘Babylove’
The Texas-based artist channels something hauntingly deep and beautiful into his latest single, ‘Babylove’, a thoroughly entertaining, immersive, multi-instrumental heartbreak ballad that will have you jiving along all of its 4-minute runtime!
Ezra comes from a place of intense lived experiences. Having wrestled his life back from the despairing darkness of a painful divorce, he now sings and performs with a wounded but healing voice, reflecting on a love gone wrong through his Americana-powered sound.
‘Babylove’ opens compellingly with an evocative guitar melody accompanied by singular boot stomp beats, in true Americana fashion. The tone is wistful, introspective, and urgent. As are Ezra’s vocals as he bears his heart out in the opening lines.
‘Breaking the stones, breaking my heart. Hear in the cold, in the dark wind, rolling bones’.
The words seem to so effortlessly flow through his raspy, low tenor, reminding one of Johnny Cash. Ezra leans further into expressing that unimaginable pain of heartbreak as violins join in the medley. At the minute mark, the track rolls into a full-bodied, brilliant instrumental arrangement. Strings, bass, guitar, drums, and curious rattles all combine sublimely to create a cinematic, contemporary feel.
We learn that this track was recorded within a Texan cabin, and if you listen closely, you can practically hear the room breathe in between notes. It’s so well done. Check out the accompanying music video that showcases Ezra & the others in magnificent light.
Just past the two-minute mark, the arrangement slows well down, allowing for some breathing space. Out of which emerges a thoughtful, raw guitar solo from Ezra. Soon joined in by the talented strings, it swells dramatically. It’s one of the most striking folk rock arrangements we’ve ever listened to.
What’s remarkable about ‘Babylove’ is just how raw and spontaneous it sounds. Yet, it delivers a supremely polished, heartfelt sound. We absolutely love what we’ve experienced from Ezra Vancil and his group of amazing musicians.
‘Babylove’ is part of his upcoming double album, ‘Morning & Midnight’, part of the ‘Midnight’ side of things. Showing us the descent into darkness. We can’t wait to hear what comes next!
