Climb into bed, and just get over the one you so badly needed to let go. Listen to Jill Desiree’s latest provocative soul-jazz track, ‘Broken’!

The Berklee-trained, Cali-based R&B artist unveils a steamy blend of her soft, intimate vocals, honest lyrics and superb jazz instrumentation. You’re soulfully serenaded by warm evocative sax, bass, keys and drum arrangements as she breaks down in fierce, honest, deeply personal recollection of what she’s had to go through and how it’s left her with no choice but to end this ‘Broken’ relationship.

The song won the top prize for Best Jazz Song at the 29th Annual USA Songwriting Competition, and it’s little wonder. Jill pours her heart into this, hitting you with dramatic innuendos all directed toward the person who could never quite love her the way so validly deserves to be loved.

Her vocal tone is gorgeous and velvety, every word dripping with sweet, sultry & powerful emotions. Clearly, her esteemed influences from the likes of Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, and Whitney Houston rub off well, but she takes the spotlight superbly with her own unique panache and personality.

Musically, it evokes a smoky, midnight jazz club vibe. Right from that smooth opening bass slide, it is joined by light crisp drums, ethreal keys strokes and remarkably evocative saxophone. Building slowly along with Jill’s storytelling, it swells magnificently in the chorus, where she lays down an ultimatum.

Halfway in, we’re captivated by a string of solos, starting with the playful keys, followed by the saxophone (written by producer Katisse Buckingham). The sheer symphony and cohesive energy within this group of superb musicians is magical.

Jill returns with a powerful, crescendoing concluding vocal declaration, a final call to herself to wise up, and signs off with a flourish.

Wow, ‘Broken’ had us captivated and grooving in equal measures. A definite addition to any contemporary jazz, blues & soul music playlists.
