The Dutch indie singer/songwriter, Johan van Mullem, brings a delightfully refreshing energy to his debut. Somewhere between Tame Impala and The Weeknd, Johan crafts a silky-smooth sound that’s got a magnetic pull. We open on an oh-so-groovy rhythmic arrangement. Crisp beats, subtle atmospherics and seductive tones pair with Johan’s soft, sincere vocals like a fine wine and cheese.

The lyrics are simple and catchy and paint a neon-lit picture of obsession, lust, rejection and redemption. The echo-fade effects on his vocals, along with the rhythmic beat, draw you into his emotional world completely. You’re able to intimately relate to his honest, hurt feelings.

Musically, ‘Damn!’ does so well to not complicate matters in its production. It’s slick and modern and boasts of great bass and balance; this is a track to lose yourself in along with a good set of headphones. Johan leans into a tried and tested R&B, alt-pop sound that easy to listen to and understand.

For his debut track, Johan delivers a supremely confident, cool statement performance here. One that speaks volumes to his maturity and clarity of his artistic.
