K-Syran is a singer-songwriter, producer, director, actor, feminist and human rights activist from Norway. Her father, a professional drummer along with the jazz and rock bands she has been a part of, have ensured a musical upbringing for her. Her performance at Manilva Pride in 2019 displays her commitment to equality and dignity for all. She has been releasing music since 2014 and has an extensive discography of singles and Eps. Her latest single “I can’t feel” is an upbeat track produced by Grammy nominated artist and producer Stonebridge.
“I Can’t Feel” is a short track that has the sonic palette of early 2000s pop music, reminding one of iconic performances like the Vengaboys. The beat is very high energy and remains so consistently throughout the track. The synth-claps add to the club-like aesthetic the track is going for. The single is successful in creating an EDM atmosphere that is not dark, but rather bright and joyful.
The whisper-ey layered vocal performance by K-Syran displays range when she hits several bass notes. Although the length of the track brings with it its own limitations, I wished it played more with energy levels or displayed more variety in its instrumentation.
The line “I Can’t Feel” is used repetitively as is characteristic of the song-writing in the genre. This lack of feeling could be perceived as cathartic or sad, although the track tends to focus on the latter. The dark lyrics stand in juxtaposition to the upbeat production and the track taps into this disconnect. Feelings of not feeling satisfied, living, feeling, breaking, healing and self-delusion are explored.
