If you’ve ever suffered through sleepless nights, you’re going to love Katie Belle’s hypnotic, immersive synth opus confessional, ‘Bad Dreams’.
The eclectic pop artist who based out Atlanta, is gearing up for the release of her debut EP, ‘People Pleaser’ out later this year. Her recent releases, ‘Cigarettes’ & ‘Bad Dreams’ have been making waves all over, captivating listeners through her blend of intimate, sultry vocals riding on dreamy, ethereal synth pop arrangements.
Imagine if Billie Eilish & Daft Punk came together to put out a retro-pop dedication to all the insomniacs out there. That’s that kind of vocally compelling, complex synth pop sound we experience from this delicately composed and produced track.
We open on wicked, pulsing beats and surrealistic synth harmonies, perfectly capturing that unhinged state of mind, lying awake in your bed at 3 am, unable to sleep!
Enter Belle’s smoky, intense vocals, delivered with an effortlessly cool sense of exasperation. “Can’t sleep ‘cause I’m all in my head, trippin’ over things that I said,” she confesses, taking us deep into her turbulent mind that just refuses to switch off.
The tracks flow forward with a relentless, evocative tempo with subtle, intriguing sounds and shimmering synths as the lyrics take us to hazy, darker spaces.
When the chorus arrives, its with a soulful, hopeful change in tone. Like seeing a silver lining in a cloudy sky, she sings, earnestly, “Keep me up, when the stars and the moon collide / I need you to save me from my bad dreams.”
The track’s lyrics dives deep into themes of dependence, disconnection and chaos. Lines like, ‘Pushing the limits, I know that I’ll cross,’ imply a sense of knowing what’s wrong. She sings, “doing bad things, I got bad dreams,” with crushing honesty and vulnerability. It reminds listeners of Tove Lo’s ‘Habits’ with its deeply personal, destructive, yet relatable, existential crisis expressed.
Katie’s vocals are by far the standout aspect of ‘Bad Dreams’. She’s able to convey that sense of intensity and drive while also flowing into a psychedelic vocal tone, one that isn’t afraid to go down the rabbit hole and see how far it goes.
By the closing bridge, Belle admits, “Losing control, I don’t like it like that,” but the track refuses to go down silently, looping back into pulsating sections before concluding with a flourish. “Bad Dreams” is the sound of a sleepless night set to compelling vocals and a hypnotic beat. Dive in.
