Atlantan Rockers Last Relapse are back with a dreamy, psychedelia-tinged guitar extravaganza, ‘Hey Girl’

Think Nirvana meets Tool. Last Relapse delivers a hypnotic alt-rock soundscape with ‘Hey Girl,’ which leaves you tumbling down a rabbit hole of immersive punk rhythms, catchy vocals, and groovy guitar solos. This track is fresh off their latest self titled EP, which sees the group reunite after a decade-long hiatus. Safe to say, they’ve returned to the scene with a renewed dynamism, vigour and energy, reflecting their gripping, atmospheric sound.

‘Hey Girl’ opens onto somber, hypnotizing atmospherics and low guitar notes, immediately inducing a subdued, reflective mood. We launch into the opening verse, the vocalist pouring out the confines of his isolated, troubled mind into semi-coherent words that seem to pierce deep.

The lyrics seem to revolve around a toxic love story, one of validation, obsession, lust, dependence and more. The angst-laden yet detached tone of the vocals are particularly striking, Cobain-esque in all similarity.

Musically, this track evokes nostalgia for the peak grunge era of Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and the lot but with a refreshingly original modern alt-rock soul. Our favorite part starts just before the 3 min mark, when a cosmic, echoing guitar solo conveys great emotional depth, and that distortion tone is just gorgeous too. But it doesn’t end there, as we’re treated to an extended solo that swrils, spiral and dances its way to the track’s conclusion.

Last Relapse is an Atlanta-born indie-rock band known for fusing raw confession with widescreen, dream-tinged guitar work.
