Straight out of something in a fever dream comes Lucian Lacewing’s mystical, fantastical composition, ‘Night Of Whispers’ that evokes awe and wonder in equal measures.
The former leadman of electronica group Lunarians branches off on his own trippy adventure with the release of just his second single, following ‘Land of Enchantment’. His unique blend of otherworldly synths, exotic instrumentals, textures, effects, and vocals from 8 different vocalists makes his arrangements a unique work of art!
That’s the best way to describe Lucian’s compositions, really. Their aren’t bound by any conventional song structure or style. His creations reflect what it truly means to experimental, pushing the boundaries of what’s known and recognized and crossing into sheer other-wordly psychadelia.
‘Night Of Whispers’ takes off in truly ethereal fashion. Delicate synth tones, swelling atmospherics, and angelic vocals immediately set a meditative tone. Listen closely; you can hear a range of instrumentals, cleverly tuned and textured to evoke intrigue and sheer weightlessness.
It just around the minute mark that the arranged vocals begin to emerge prominently. Lucian credits his influences to Classical Indian Music, jazz, dream pop and others that contribute some context to his otherwise totally unconventional musical process. In his own words, ‘To me being experimental means not really having a vision to begin. It isn’t truly an experiment if you know what the outcome is going to be. I just like to play around with ideas and samples until something begins to happen. Then follow it wherever it needs to go.’
And go it does, to places dark, light, surreal, and everything in between. Halfway in, there’s a particularly telling grand aura created that sounds like the soundtrack to an ascension. We perceived themes of fear, longing, and transcendence amongst the complex range this track evokes.
Fittingly titled ‘Night Of Whispers’, the track definitely has a calming, mind-clearing influence upon you that lasts long beyond the track’s ending.
