Macedo is a California based music project by twin sisters Michelle and Melissa. Growing up in a musical family, the sisters of mixed-race origin picked up instruments at a really young age. The multi-talented artists pursue their skills in acting and theatre outside of music, coming together to create with their sisterly connection for Macedo. They have been releasing music from as early as 2011, and their latest single “Optimistic” pays homage to nostalgic 80s disco pop!

The sonic palette of “Optimistic” is reminiscent of flashy 80s synth pop with hints of disco. The beat is consistent and brings with it immense amounts of energy. The combination of synths, clappy percussion and EDM makes for an instrumentally simple single. I particularly enjoyed the high-pitched keys in the background that create an ethereal atmosphere.

Melissa and Michelle give a vocal performance that constantly goes hand in hand in the form of a chorus. Though the listener doesn’t hear their voices separately, together they act as the track’s backbone. The back-up vocals and airy sonic palette during the bridge along with maracas in the background provide much needed variation and texture.

The songwriting lives up to the title of the track, looking at all of life through the filter of optimism. It reinforces a sense of self-assurance that looks at a glass half full and does not care much for public opinion. Even in the face of fear, the capacity to find a way to live one’s best life is a heartwarming message! The track is optimal for rolling the closing credits on a children’s superhero movie!
