Strap in for a whimsically dark, poetic, blues rock ballad debut track from Mangy Mutt, ‘Devils Got Your Soul’!

The man behind Mangy Mutt is Aussie singer-songwriter Matt Bowman, hailing from Newcastle, Australia. He really pours his heart and soul into this hypnotic, foot-stomping blues rock ballad, replete with epic guitar slides and his raw, honest vocals and lyrics.

We open onto a piercing, wailing guitar slide, burning its way into your ears, feeling like you just took a shot of fire whiskey. It blooms into an intoxicating blues rock arrangement along with melodic organs and marching drums, driving home the feeling that you’re in for something special right here.

Enter Matt’s rough but fantastically evocative vocals. He sings with an enthusiastic, entertaining tenor, letting us into his groovy, very personal headspace.

“A smile a day keeps the darker away, That’s all I ever asked from you,

But here you go acting all terminally unique. Looks like we are through…’

The lyrics are riddled with meaning, as Matt reflects on his troubled existence through whimsy, humor and sarcasm. The tone of his voice reflects the depth of his pain and emotion vividly, like Jim Morrison’s anguished wails in many a Doors track.

In fact, the similarities to The Doors don’t end there. Mangy Mutt’s songwriting style and song structure do bear a faint resemblance to the legendary Californian four-piece in the use of hypnotic swinging blues rock, country rhythms, brilliant organ melodic progressions, and, of course, raw, wailing vocals.

This is a track that’s not necessarily an easy listen but will hit hard and true for those who have survived walking down troubled paths, as the artist has done.
