The Marsh Family is a family music project by the Marshs based in Kent, UK. It consists of artists Ben, Danielle, Alfie, Thomas, Ella and Tess who has been playing together since the children were born. Their parody tracks about lockdown published in 2020 gave them some viral success which they have followed up by releasing their own music. Their latest track “Cool Kid” is a jazzy number dripping with sass.

“Cool Kid” has one of the grooviest basslines I have heard in a while, making it my favourite element on the track! The rhythmic percussion holds the track together while the twangy guitars add flavour to it. The lead vocals are sharp and cold while the back-up vocals add texture to the single. The instrumental section towards the end of the track is one the many highlights of the song.

The songwriting calls out a “Cool Kid” on their inauthenticity. Following trends, screenshots and hashtags obtain primacy in a young person’s life but the absence of depth in these actions is called into question. In trying to be someone you are not and “made up sincerity” many of life’s joys get left behind. I enjoyed that Marsh Family address this with their comical tone and sarcasm that they are known for.

I thought the single has a very playful energy to it and enjoyed the fact that all the members of the band contributed to it equally. Everyone was allowed to shine with no one left behind, which is a very healthy environment for a family band. Make sure to check out “Cool Kid” by Marsh Family here:
