Matt Johnson’s new release, ‘For Good’ is a beautiful reimagination of a classical Broadway piece, ‘For Good’.
Originally composed and performed by Stephen Schwartz for the popular Broadway musical and feature film ‘Wicked,’ this rendition of ‘For Good’ by the American pianist and composer Matt Johnson exudes a graceful, sensitive vibe.
Matt’s years of dedication & experience as a pianist and composer, in which he’s built up an impressive collection of works, enable him to take this theatrical composition, replete with vocals and orchestral arrangements, and transform it into a reflective piano instrumental piece. One that sincerely emotes the story of the original, one of transformation, friendship and the importance of meaningful relationships in our lives.
‘For Good’ opens with crystal clear piano tones that immediately give the track emotional depth and space. Matt’s playing preserves the structure of the original so well and, in fact, creates a more nuanced harmonic dimension to the song. Over the track’s 5-minute runtime, you’re captivated by the interlude between the upper and lower tones. It works in beautiful symphony to evoke the emotional core, with patience and grace.
Matt’s interesting journey as a pianist began at the tender age of 6, and he later began to perform at competitions and orchestral appearances. However, it was at the New England Conservatory of Music that he really got into advanced jazz and piano compositions. This, plus years of composing experience, has given him a more than keen eye to master storytelling through his piano.
As a result, ‘For Good’ is a rendition that’s respectful of the original while crafting an entirely different identity of its own. As a standalone instrumental piece, you really get a fresh, deeper perspective for this composition.
