Matthew Dorko’s album ‘Trio!’ is electrifying, delivering the energy, intensity, and immediacy that jazz fans expect from a live performance.
A compact 5-track release, each track has simple, rich jazz instrumentation: that holy trio of guitar, drums, and bass. Leading the trio on guitar is Matthew Dorko, who went from busking on the streets of Boston and New Orleans to honing his skills with Ellis Marsalis at the University of New Orleans. He is joined by Mike Connors on drums and Larry Kukers on bass. Together, the group is a singular force, infusing each performance on ‘Trio!’ with passion, precision, and remarkable spontaneity in their storytelling. With every song, you’re pulled into a relentless, pulsating listening experience.
The opening track, ‘What She Said’, bursts to life with childlike energy. The sheer momentum and flow generated by the trio’s tight interplay are compelling. The clear, twangy resonance of the guitar is built upon some of the best drumming and bass playing on the record. It’s the kind of effortless symphony that comes with years of dedication and performance.
‘At Long Last’ delights the heart immediately with the warmth of the strings and subtle percussion. ‘Blue For You’ settles into a loose second-line groove, with the rhythm section leaning into a buoyant, streetwise pulse beneath the guitar. Evoking images of lazy summer afternoons, the track flows at a leisurely pace, with a delightful tambourine added festively.
As it is with jazz improvisation, the journey is always intriguing. The charm, wit, and cohesive brilliance of the performers shine throughout. A groovy bassline leads to the swelling guitar progression. Light strums and adornments from Dorko captivate, and the track flows to an upbeat, relaxed outro.
‘As You Were’ springs back to life with a jolt of energy. Relentless drums hold the tempo fantastically, and the guitar follows a more cosmic route. Beautifully balanced and evolved, the arrangement is intriguing and draws you in. We’re treated to an absolute ripper of a drum solo before the guitar springs to life again. Up to the very last moment, the track pulses and vibrates with spellbinding improvisations.
These aren’t just tracks; it would be better to refer to them as power-packed performances. ‘So You See’ cements the emotional rollercoaster of ‘Trio!’. The first half of the track presents a compelling melodic journey, pausing just ever so briefly before flowing forward. Forward momentum is the biggest advantage Matthew Dorko and his trio have. Technical excellence, combined with a fearless spirit to transcend what’s known and rehearsed—and instead create in the moment—is exciting to hear.
‘Trio!’ as an album consists of living, breathing, brilliant jazz performances that create a memorable sense of journey. There’s a start, middle, and conclusion in each track, creating a cohesive and engaging listening experience. Excellent recording quality and minimal production make for a rich, intoxicating listen.
