Mercy Kelly releases stirring, cinematic new opus, ‘Out in the Night’
A return to form for the young four piece outfit from Greater Manchester sees them tap into an intense, anthemic energy, one that their fans have come to love them for. ‘Out in the Night’ or OITN refelcts on that restless vulnerability of youth, a need to explore in the dark unknown, to channelize all this energy without being shackled or restrained by anyone or anything.
We open onto moody, melancholic riffs, driving urgents drums and quietly compelling vocals that sing of seeking something, anything, in the cold embrace of the night, under the weak & worn streetlight. It feels personal and relatable, a powerful statement on what it means to feel the inescapable pull of reckless adventure.
As the tracks build momentum, you sense something big is coming. Simmering tension, arising from the ‘chaos and misjudged control’ a lamenting cry of ‘What ever happened to the life we used to know?’. We explode into the chorus with a cathartic, passionate, titular cry, ‘Out in the Night’, the supporting pop-rock arrangements soaring and atmospheric.
It reminds us of the intensity of standout Scottish rockers Snow Patrol. Mercy Kelly are carving out their own immersive rock sound, one that is sure to fill up shows with fans screaming out the chorus lines right alongside them.
Led by frontman Jack Marland, guitarist Adam Bridge, bassist Thomas Mullen and drummer Connor Byrne, the band’s sound will definitely appeal to the old-fashioned, emotional, wear-your-heart-on-your-sleeve listener. We especially love that they balance hard-hitting pop-rock vibrancy with intimate, heartfelt vulnerability.
“Out In The Night” is a track that deserves to be played loud and sung along to with equal fervor. Uncompromising and unapologetic, Mercy Kelly are forging their own path with renewed drive, and it shows up in their sound.
