Listen to Boston-based indie rock trio Mnemonist’s kaleidoscopic ballad, ‘Excuses’
Fresh off their latest album, ‘Perfectly Honest Every Time’ Mnenomist’s ‘Excuses’ evokes early Coldplay, Radiohead and a sprinkling of the shimmering guitar magic of Hermanos Guiterrez. A hazy, emotional confessional built upon exquisite synth and guitar tones, anguised vocals and driving percussions that indicate a deeply emotional tale.
Opening onto sad, nostalgic tones that feel like you’re looking through photographs of people you’ve loved and lost. Soft, stirring vocals emerge crooning sadly, ‘Long Night, Look the morning in her stone eyes And be the first, To let it work….’. As the tragic, poetic prose unfolds, you’re entranced and drawn into the warm, intimate arrangements.
The verse flows forward with restraint and swells into a cinematic, colorful chorus. Driving guitar rhythms, shimmering cymbals and impassioned vocals imbue a sense of release, of saying what’s been left unsaid.
‘Excuses’ excels on many fronts. Firstly, for its refreshingly original, warm, indie rock sound. Next, that hazy, gritty distortion contrasts well with the soothing guitar tones. Our favorite bit is just before the three-minute mark, when the arrangements crescendo dramatically, impacting you like some sort of transcendence.
Concluding with soft whispers, the track ends emotionally, like final parting words. We’re loving the warm nostalgia of Mnemonist’s sound and look forward to immersing ourselves into their latest album, ‘Perfectly Honest Every Time’ next! Add this to your rainy-day, indie-rock playlists!
