When It All Goes Quiet hits like something creeping up behind you. From the first note, it feels haunting, like a woman’s mind wandering down dark alleys at night.
Oli, the UK-based artist, has been making waves and you can hear why. The track moves slowly with layers of uneasiness and menace folding into each other. Opposing to this are the vocals–a voice so calm, almost soothing, even as the music carries that quiet tension underneath.
What’s to look out for is the compelling music video. It plays with light and shadow in a way that draws you in. We follow Oli all the way back to her home, arriving with her past midnight. Inside, it feels voyeuristic, like we’re quietly watching her go through her own space.
As John Berger says, “Men look at women and women watch themselves being looked at.” Here, Oli seems aware of that gaze, almost performing it. She moves through what seem like ordinary routines until things start to feel off.
She bathes in a tub of blood. She floats, drifting from the living room into the bedroom, pausing to stare out the window. The blues in the frame make everything feel cold and clinical. As though a piercing eyes follow her around.
The chorus repeats, “When it all goes quiet / I come back again / I’ll finally feel like I can”. It feels like a negotiation with self; a return to safety after the chaos. The chorus leaves you suspended. And the only way to make it through is to wait it out. To let time pass.
The track lingers like a thought you can’t shake, a quiet, unsettling presence that only eases with the dawn.
