Partick Costello releases an urgent message delivered in a fantastic blues-rock sound, ‘Baltimore City/Let the Brothers Breathe’.
There aren’t too many artists who put the greater good ahead of their creative expressions, but this artist is a golden exception. This is a track that makes a courageous call to action to stop police brutality.
Paying heartfelt tributes to countless black men who have fallen victim to violence from police personnel all over America. Patrick had this to say, “The music itself was inspired by blues and R&B rock songs of the past, and included a chorus that was meant to be an anthem of sorts, demanding that Black men in particular be protected from the violence, discrimination and prejudice that has sadly been integral to US and particularly police culture since the nation’s founding.”
The lyrics highlight three particular victims, Freddie Gray from Baltimore, Eric Garner from NYC and Michael Brown from Ferguson. Each verse expands on what happened in the each instance. Rather than point blame at any one person, Partick sets his sights on the power that be who govern the cities where this happened. He knows that this is a systemic issue and to affect real change, its crucial to highlight how the system failed each of those young men who had to pay the highest price.
This is song not just for justice, but a heartfelt plea, a statement of conscience. Our highest respect to Patrick and all the supporting musicians who came together to create this anthem. It speaks volumes to the potential of music to not just entertain, but act as a medium of disruption. To put an end to a problem that has been tearing apart America recently.
