Roisin O’Hagan is a singer-songwriter from Essex, UK, who has been releasing music since 2017 and has built up an extensive discography of singles and Eps. She has been writing and performing since she was twelve years old and her musical household self-admittedly is a huge influence on her narrative songwriting process. Inspired by artists like Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and Coldplay, her latest single “Midnight Indigo” is a genre-blending exploration of pop and rock!
The vocal performance by Roisin O’Hagan is captivating from the get go and remains the highlight of “Midnight Indigo”. She has a really strong and powerful voice that she uses unabashedly and manages to bring a youthful innocence to the single.
The acoustic instrumentation, clappy percussion and even some of Roisin’s vocal inflections takes a listener to country music while chorus unmistakably taps into rock and early 2000s pop. The layering on the vocals were well done!
The songwriting explores a whirlwind romance that is thrilling, exciting and all-consuming but is at the same time filled with insecurities and the absence of trust. The line “You’re a nightmare and I can’t stop dreaming” speaks of how the infatuation is a bad idea but there is an attraction one can’t help but lean into despite and maybe even because of it. This exploration of the highs and lows of a young partnership contains delivery that is intimate and filled with emotion.
