Serpents is a music project based in Poland that blends modern metal with electronic music production. The five-member band is self-admittedly influenced by iconic acts like Nine Inch Nails, Spiritbox, and Northlane. They have been releasing music since 2023 and their sixth single “Signal” is an impressive addition to their discography.

The track starts off by building up slowly to what is an intense pay off. While the instrumentation consists of all the sonic elements that make up a classic metal piece, the ambience and atmosphere is created through the electronic production. The pacing is rhythmic and urgent and the motif as characteristic of the genre, is that of release. The lead vocals drip with emotions ranging from rage to ecstasy and the songwriting as mentioned in the title explores “Waiting for a signal” to take the step you have been meaning to take.

What the single does best is play with intensity. It juxtaposes extremely soft energy with whispery vocals and atmospheric sound with heavy and intense sonic elements. This match-up goes back and forth throughout the entirety of the single. While the soft landings provide a listener some much needer respite, the build up generates the energy for a release. The switch between these two sonic palettes is unpredictable, making it difficult to anticipate and manage expectations, this keeps a listener engaged and on their toes.
