Groove to Soft as Hell’s immersive alt rock soundscape, ‘I’d Rather Fly’!

The Brighton-based experimental project Soft as Hell delivers a heady instrumental composition, ‘I’d Rather Fly’. Blending elements of folk, psych rock, ambeint and electronic textures in a rather unique, cinematic manner that does justice to their influences, which include Pink Floyd.

The track opens onto droning, brooding organ melodies. It hypnotizes and captivates in equal measures as a driving drum beat and guitar riffs provide fantastic forward momentum and groove next. With every cycle, new layers of sounds and textures appear, creating a beautifully orchestrated sonic whirpool.

Before you know it, you’re two minutes in, ‘I’d Rather Fly’ is picking up even more steam, especially when that ethereal guitar tone hits. It’s only past the three-minute mark that a significant swerve occurs. The organ melodies return, revitalized and funk-forward this time. The tone now is far more liberated and upbeat, as if ascended from all earthly matters entirely. With a sudden drum flourish, the track concludes.

It’s beautiful to witness a soundscape’s journey with all the twists and transitions. Especially in a track such as this that relies entirely on instrumentals. Without a word, Soft as Hell is able to craft a gripping, intriguing sonic narrative that keeps you listening intently.

The production on ‘I’d Rather Fly’ is rich and expressive. Right from the organ’s masterful layering to the additions of the guitar effects, it all speaks to a brave, adventurous mindset. The artist is able to evoke a complex myriad of emotions through his telling composition that leaves you wanting more!

We’re looking forward to hearing more from this progressive, exciting new genre-fusing artist, Soft as Hell.
