Soulucien is a music artists from Dayton, Ohio who primarily works within the field of Hip-hop and R&B. He is self-admittedly inspired by early 2000s music that has been a deep influence in the way he approaches creating music of his own. He has been releasing music since 2020 and has built up an extensive discography of five singles and an EP. His 6th and latest single “Cribski” is the first track from the short two-track EP titled “2Gs” with fellow artist FF King.
Soulucien oozes creativity and utilises this energy in all aspects of the song creating process. His album cover sets an interesting tone for the tracks within them and the title of the EP along with the song titles are extremely clever! “Cribski” starts off with an intentionally lazy and sleepy ambience with dragged out vocals. This creates an ambience that is trippy, broken only by the energetic ad lib “Cribski!”
We hear some mumble rapping in the beginning, followed by R&B spoken word, singing as well as hard-core rapping giving us quite a bit of variety in vocal deliveries. The vocal performances are light, layered and whisper-filled, standing in juxtaposition to the beat that is heavy and intricate at the same time. The percussion dominates the track and contains within it most of the single’s energy.
The songwriting repeats the line “let me take you home” almost in a pleading way, trying to sell the idea by emphasizing that the environment of the club can be recreated at home with the liquor one owns. The songwriting is explicitly sexual and sultry but keeps it chill without leaning into it to the point of vulgarity.
