German indie outfit teenweek’s debut release, ‘The Kids Are Cruel’ is a captivating, anthemic alt-pop opus that speaks its mind, smooth & proud!

teenweek, comprising of Phil, Rod, Djamila, and Akio, hit that sweet spot between dreaminess and social commentary. Offering a whimsical view of the generational divide, coated in laid-back vocals, airy tones, and crisp beats. Its a refreshing new sound, yet one could draw parallels to Tame Impala, Artic Monkeys & The Beatles.

‘The Kids Are Cruel’ opens with an inviting drum arrangement, building layers with airy, echoing synth notes, basslines, and nonchalantly cool yet urgent vocals. The opening verse is compelling in its contents. With Opening lines like ‘government’s got a new plan, to fight for democracy while they can’, teenweek invites the listeners to see whats really happening in our world and how the powers that be are doing what it takes to keep the war machine running.

The use of pauses is smart & poignant. With each, the track builds steadily in momentum and sound, leading up to a rapturous bridge section, with multiple vocals joining in now, singing ‘You know we did the best we could, to make our reasons understood…’. The chorus explodes into a colorful section with catchy, sing-along harmonies. ‘The Kids Are cruel, they don’t wanna fight’. Its a deeply ironic statement, the humor of which wouldn’t be lost on anyone listening, young or old.

Over the next two verses, teenweek smartly explores this growing dissonance between generations, not outrightly siding with anyone. They do really well to capture the sense of disillusionment that many young people feel these days and how there is a growing awareness amongst the kids of today to make their own choices finally and not be forced into someone else’s war anymore.

As a debut single, ‘The Kids Are Cruel’ is a fantastic opening salvo. It hits all the right notes in terms of having a compelling, catchy sound and lyrics, that right balance between laid-back and dialled in. A definite listen for alt-pop and pop-rock fans or anyone looking for more intelligent music.
