The Harbours are an indie-pop duo from Leicestershire, England. The two-piece band consists of Will who plays the lead guitar, drums, bass and performs backing vocals. Ollie is the lead vocalist who also plays the keys, bass and backing guitar. Their second and latest single “So Sweet” is a summer-ey track giving off strong boy-band vibes!
The track begins with an extended, twangy, ‘The Strokes’ adjacent guitar riff, setting up a strong Rock in summer atmosphere. The single is consistently upbeat and makes liberal use of claps as a part of its percussion that makes the song feel lighter and more joyful.
The lead vocals are well done and have a plurality to them while the guitar occupies a more central place. I thought that the production did a good job of constructing an ambience and found the guitar solo to be really enjoyable. The smooth horns on the second verse are a great touch and ended up being one of my favourite elements on the track!
The songwriting is extremely endearing. The first verse explores the self-doubt one faces when encountering something new that feels oddly familiar and the fear of consequences similar to the ones experienced in the past. The second verse looks at letting go and trusting your feelings although confusion about definitions might strongly be present in the air. The chorus describes a love interest and one’s physical responses to them very charmingly.
