Strap in for an intoxicating, gritty, folk rock ballad from The Night and the Dirty, ‘My Hurt’
The Seattle-based trio unleashes a wicked, theatrical blend of rock & Americana and synthwave, set to the crushing backdrop of doom and gloom with their latest release, ‘My Hurt’. Its the best thing we’ve heard in the folk-rock genre since ‘The Dead South’
The track opens ominiously, like the score to the upcoming apocalypse. Crashing drums and cymbals, dark atmospherics and moody banjo strings herald a grave outpouring. Frontman Kelly McShane’s raspy, despairing vocals, amid hypnotizing distortions, do exactly that; they distort your sense of reality. His tone, deliciously dark and playful evoke immense mystery and captivates like a gory murder story.
At its core, ‘My Hurt’ explores disturbing themes, yet it’s soldered in a never-say-die spirit. Speaking on the track, the band shares, ‘The song takes the listener on a journey of despair with cries for help in morse code, the death of a soul, and revival by guitar. This was influenced by dark, subdued, repressed feelings, and Romanian folkinfluence.”
Hypnotizing you with warped, self-hating vocals up to its halfway point, ‘My Hurt’ then takes a brilliant sonic turn. We’re treated to an absolutely gobsmacking instrumental array. It builds tension deliciously before launching into an orgasmic, psychedelic solo that pierces deep and true.
Before you’ve had a chance to recover, the trio launches you into a whirlpool-esque emotional, confessional outro that ends in raspy vocals and moody strings. Phew! It leaves you sitting in silence, in quivering admiration for The Night and the Dirty’s brilliance and authenticity. This is a must-listen for all those who savor dark, intelligent folk rock music.
