Lana Del Rey’s heart-rendering, slow-burning masterpiece ‘Summertime Sadness’ is that good and revered for a reason. So it’s not easy to replicate the hypnotic, evocative magic of that track. Tonal Swell have just released a compelling reimagined cover track that does justice to the original while showcasing their own uniqueness.
A rising name in the alt-pop scene, Tonal Swell rises to the challenge with courage, grace, and an admirable attention to detail in the production, composition, and arrangement of this cover. They bring onboard the talented vocalist, MiLera, to replicate LDR’s sultry vocals in a more grounded way.
The standout difference in this cover is the use of rich, brassy instrumentation and airy sounds in place of the original’s darker serious textures. It completely changes the tonality of ‘Summertime Sadness’, making it feel more cinematic, expansive, and performative. It isn’t so much centered around the vocals; instead, the instrumentation here is much more prominent and expressive, matching the vocals in tone and intensity.
Taking nothing away from the vocals, either. They dance gracefully and with a hint of lightness over the sonic landscape, while still preserving the sadness and emotional depth expressed by LDR.
The production here is of a very high standard. The various musical arrangements are beautifully balanced. When required, the vocals shine through with intent and emotion. Overall, the energy of this remake is warm and comforting.
With the release of this debut cover, Tonal Swell makes an impression to remember. We look forward to seeing what else they are capable of shortly. Stream ‘Tonal Swell – Summertime Sadness (Cover)’ on Spotify here:
