Settle in for a cosmic, operatic, heartfelt tribute by Yo, ‘Volver al aire’.

This genre-transcending composition was put together by the artist known as Yo, to honour the memory of his recently deceased grandmother Carmen Sánchez Barrera (Huelva, 1929 – Valencia, 2025). A prodigal singer since her youth, she was destined to be a star, she even had her artist name picked out – Carmina Alegría.

Alas, her life took her down a different path and she was never able to realise that dream. Now, her grandson is the one to carry her dreams forward and manifest them in this time by making her the star of his latest, ‘Volver al aire’.

Literally translated to ‘Return to air’, this neo classical track is an emotional, transcendental ode to Carmina’s singing prowess, highlighting the idea of her voice finally being on the airwaves.

We open on cosmic tones, intriguing synth effects and are first introduced to Carmina’s majestic, operatic vocals. Yo joins into the fray with his vocals, adding fantastic balance.

As the opus expands, Carmina’s vocals really begin to soar, and we begin to see just how remarkable of a voice she had. She sings with incredible emotional depth and grace, conveying a range of emotions. Adding to her theatrical delivery is an intriguing, new-age sound design. It gives the track this remarkable, futuristic, space opera feel.

At its core ‘Volver al aire’ holds a deeper message. One about our lives, dreams and death. Yo leaves you thinking philosophically about your own existence and that of your loved ones.

What would your voice sound like to those after you?

Can we, like Yo has here, each leave a lasting legacy for future generations that showcase our most urgent creative pursuits that somehow didnt really come to fruition when we were alive?

‘Volver al aire’ is an integral part of an entire album dedicated to the life and voice of her beloved grandmother, Carmina Alegria. It truly is a stunning work of art that channelises grief into something ethreal, timeless and beautiful. A soundscape that transcends time and reminds us what’s really important in this life.
