zohd follows the release of his first EP titled “Untitled” in 2023 with his latest project “A Western”. Although he keeps his biographies and formal descriptions ambiguous, his goofy Instagram presence presents adequate background for his music that overall takes a fun and lighter tone. The third track “even” off of his new release has colourful production and a flow that goes hard!

The production on “Even” is very bright and cheerful. The synth feels like it is revving and doubles up as bass while the percussion is heavy and similar to an 808 hip-hop beat. Accompanied by some high-pitched slick beats, the mixing sets up the perfect landing for zohd’s vocals.

zohd’s deep voice with a hint of raspiness really suits the flows he attempts on the track. The flow he taps into on the second verse where he pauses after every word is very rhythmic.  zohd makes the use of his voice along with some unintelligible lyricism in the same way one would usually use a sample to create ambience. I thought that this choice was really innovative and made the track really stand out!

The lyricism on the track is filled with humour on lines like calling someone “Mayonnaise”. The writing is contemporary with references like “Milly Rocking” and serves as a reflection of the culture at this particular point in time. While the first verse takes the narrative form and speaks of a man in third person whom we can assume is zohd himself, the second verse describes hardship and the will to stand tall despite it.

I really enjoyed the way track transitions to the next release on the album “ok yea” that completely switches genre in terms of the production. I recommend you enjoy the single in the context of the EP! Check out “Even” by zohd here:
