One Flew Over is an Irish music duo consisting of Irene Ni Chuinn and Martin Quinn. They primarily work within the genres of pop and rock incorporating R&B and soul occasionally. They have been releasing music since 2022 and have five singles under their belt with their latest release “Last Man Standing” being an anthemic addition to their concise discography!
We are introduced to the vocals pretty early into the track and the lead vocalist gives a strong vocal performance filled with emotion. Her vocals have twang and country-like inflections at times that hold the track together. Although the percussion is heavy and the guitar hard-hitting, they never overpower the highlight of the single, that is the voice. I thought that the ambient vocal harmonies, that are usually underrated, were used extremely well and played a crucial role in regulating the intensity of the instrumentation.
The songwriting is quite poetic and makes use of many literary devices, the metaphor in particular to convey the sense of angst one feels at the end of a relationship. It references death and an overall sense of vengeance. As evident in the line “Last Man Standing”, the track treats a relationship like a battle and the bell sounds scattered throughout the track like a match to be won. To survive and show proof of making it out alive serves as the main motif!
“Last Man Standing” by One Flew Over is the self-respect and strength one needs to me reminded of when looking to the past. Make sure to check it out here:
