Waxy Shellac and the Tasteless Apples are an eclectic bunch with a taste for novelty. Founded and fronted by Fred Meltzer, the band explores classic rock with fresh perspectives and new ideas. And it is so fun and dynamic that you can’t help but get into the spirit. ‘Shelf Life’ is the debut album from this band.

The collection, spanning thirteen tracks, gets into so many different spheres of human life. Its anecdotal narratives are quirky and witty, while some of the other pieces get into social commentaries and political allegories. And around these lyrical moments, they weave a musical ethos that elegantly creates contexts : satire, humor, nostalgia, and sentimentality.

In tracks like Threesome, Codependent Me, and Hard to Love, you’ll see the humor come to life. One talks about the narrator in a throuple with his girlfriend and her phone, the other pokes fun at pricey, high-maintenance individuals. Using an easy pop-rock/ acoustic rock soundscape, the band seamlessly deliver and land these engaging narratives.

‘Prescription Song’ critiques the industry of mindlessly prescribing drugs to people for the smallest of ailments. Deploying a savvy rock n roll track, they enlighten the listeners of the side-effects and detrimental consequences of this culture.

‘History Repeats Itself’ incites a political conversation that addresses the unstoppable circuit of unsolved issues in society from racism, gun violence, discrimination, etc. A lesson will be repeated until it is learnt. With grave instrumentals and deep vocals, the band’s message shines with a hauntingly prophetic light.

Each track springs with new life and energy that throughout the album, there’s not a single moment of saturation or fatigue. In ‘Thousand Things’ you’ll see jazz flavors, and in ‘Change of Plans’ a blues Americana delight. This album has been a long time coming, a dream of 40 years culminating in a grandiose collection.
