Pop girlies like Sabrina Carpenter, Taylor Swift and Chappelle Roan are having a field day in the mainstream music landscape, consistently topping charts and making their presence felt. Ainsley Costello, a young pop singer-songwriter with a music degree from Berklee College of Music has the aesthetics, songwriting skills, enticing vocals and exciting production to fit right in with these pop icons! She has been releasing music since 2019 and her latest single THEREGOESMY! is an endearing exploration of lyrical themes like self-love and female empowerment that she self-admittedly wished she had heard growing up.

The production on “THEREGOESMY!” balances convention and experimentation very delicately. The track starts off with a pop sonic palette filled with bright synths and clappy percussion however moves towards darker electronic production during the second verse. The colourful production makes a comeback after the bridge that has more singer-songwriter energy. I enjoyed the flashes of different genres along with the use of voice effects and EDM that added versatility to the track without taking it in a completely different direction.

Ainsley Costello’s superpower are her strong vocals with which she delivers a unique and captivating vocal performance. The songwriting explores the loss of control one feels while having a crush that is based on fantasy. The repetitive nature of this occurrence where we abandon all sense of self and of the past is relatable, especially to a young female audience. It is exciting to witness the birth of more language to explain the nuance of female experience. Small attractions becoming a big deal in the head and the feelings of going from zero to 100 in a matter of days are explored in fascinating detail pointing towards Ainsley Costello’s grasp on what the generation is feeling.
