Alex Wellkers is an independent musician who has been releasing EPs for a decade now and 2024 brings us his first full length album “Fly Away”. He is a multi-instrumentalist, having learnt to play the accordion at the tender age of 6 and later learning and experimenting with the keyboard, guitar and electric guitar he became proficient at producing all of his own music.

The first track from the album “Fly Away”, titled “You Want Us” is a short one, setting the base and a sombre atmosphere such that the rest of the album can build on top of it. Its length lets it use an unconventional song structure, using the lines “You Want Us” in repetition. The acoustic strings with its simple chord progression and rhythmic strumming pattern remains one of the core elements on the track. Alex Wellkers’ voice has a stern quality to it and he gives a strong vocal performance. In the background we hear the occasional horn and notes on a string instrument that set a folky ambience. Bowed strings kick in towards the end of the track, giving it a grand ending.

Lyrically, the track explores the bond between the singer and another entity. The closeness of the relationship is explored through the lens of inseparability and a sense of uninterruptedness. At times It feels like Alex Wellkers is informing the subject of their own desire – “You Want Us”. The repetition switching to “We want us” towards the end is interesting and hints at a path of self-love, where we want ourselves.

If you are searching for an acoustic single that has folky undertones, “You Want Us” by Alex Wellkers is the one for you!
